World Turtle Day at Rosalie Bay Resort
On Saturday, May 23, 2015 students of Morne Jaune and Grand Fond Primary Schools climbed onto a school bus headed to Rosalie Bay Resort. 30 students, between the ages of 8 and 10, celebrated World Turtle Day with Simon George, our sea turtle expert from NET Rosalie.
Learning about Sea Turtles
Simon prepared a passionate presentation for the children about the need for sea turtle protection in Dominica and across the globe.
Arts and Crafts
After the educational presentation, art instructors for children in the Kalinago territory led the young ones in a fun arts and crafts session. The children made sea turtles by gluing together an assortment of toilet paper rolls, used paper and meat containers. After painting their creations, the children snacked on a delicious fruitcake prepared by Chef Seraphine.
Nest Excavation
Finally, the children met Simon on Rosalie Bay’s beach to discover the turtle hatchery. Simon showed them how he carefully excavates a sea turtle nest. Much to the delight of the children, a baby leatherback wiggled from his egg and scurried to the water.
Seeing first-hand the positive impact of sea turtle conservation efforts, the children left with a better respect and understanding of the turtles that nest and hatch on Dominica.
