October is Creole month! We are proud to celebrate our culture as we look forward to Dominica’s National Day of Independence on November 3. It was on this day in 1978 that Dominica gained its independence from Great Britain and became an independent republic within the Commonwealth.
Celebrate on Dominica
This season is also dedicated to celebrating the unique culture of Dominica with colorful events, national dress, food, music and more. For many, the highlight of the season is World Creole Music Festival October 24 through 26. The festival is known for featuring the best in Creole music from around the world.
Dominicans also look forward to Creole Day on October 31. To celebrate the most colorful day on the island, the traditional outfit is worn on by all. The girls wear a “jupe,” the women wear a “robe dwiyet” (the National Dress) and the men wear black pants, a white shirt and a red sash around the waist.
Celebrate at Rosalie Bay
For the entire month of October, Rosalie Bay Resort is adorned in traditional Creole decor. Leading up to Creole Day, Dominicans wear Creole attire every Friday and our staff is no exception. We invite you to do the same and share photos of your Creole wear with us! If you’ll be on the island for Creole Day, participate in the festivities by wearing a straw hat or any material with a floral pattern.
Rosalie Bay is also serving a variety of Creole dining specials each day in October. Menu items include traditional Dominican dishes such as Crab backs, Callaloo soup, salt fish Accra with a creole dipping, local grapefruit juice and more.
