Wellness Wednesday: Detoxification

Weekly tips to bring island-inspired wellness into your everyday life from Rosalie Bay Resort wellness coordinator Laura Lund.

Spring is upon us. Time for cleaning out our homes. It’s also a great time to “spring clean” our bodies with detoxification.

Organic Garden | Rosalie Bay Resort, DominicaWe are constantly bombarded with chemical waste both from normal cellular activity and environmental exposure to toxins. Our body is designed to eliminate the excessive waste, but sometimes it is overloaded and needs support in detoxification.

There are many ways to detoxify. If you haven’t done it before, you can start with a mild elimination diet. Spring is the perfect time to do this as we naturally move from heavier to lighter foods.

Try  simply eliminating stimulants and inflammatory foods for 5 to 7 days. This includes caffeine, sugar, alcohol, wheat, dairy and meat. It may be necessary to wean yourself off of caffeine gradually, rather than stopping abruptly, to decrease the side effects of headache and fatigue.

During this time, we recommend eating plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables, soups and teas (ginger or lemon). The anti-oxidant properties of fruits and veggies help scavenge free radicals and eliminate them from the body. Add plenty of fresh green herbs like parsley, basil, oregano as these herbs have phytonutrients to help with detoxification. Garlic, onions and cayenne pepper help improve the circulation during this time, as does exercise.

With a little advanced preparation, such as making soup, cleaning vegetables for juicing and being armed with snacks in case you get hungry, this mild detoxification can go smooth and easy and you will actually save time. If you want to try an elimination diet while at Rosalie Bay, our talented staff will be happy to assist you.
