May 23, 2015 marks World Turtle Day. Created in 2000 by the American Tortoise Rescue, World Turtle Day is recognized around the world “to help people celebrate and protect turtles and tortoises and their disappearing habitats around the world.”

Home to the first sea turtle conservation efforts on Dominica, our eco-resort has an ongoing commitment to protect the endangered species. Each year, we’re proud to join the celebration of  World Turtle Day and share the experience with our community.

Community Celebration

Children of Dominica and guest of the resort are invited to celebrate with us this Saturday, May 23.  Simon George, our sea turtle expert, will give a fun and educational presentation about the three species of endangered sea turtles — the Leatherback, Green and Hawksbill — that nest and hatch on our black sand beach. After Simon’s educational presentation in the resort’s conference room, the children will move to the beach where they will learn about our resort’s turtle hatchery and look for turtle tracks along the beach. Then, a hands-on craft session will give our young participants the chance to create sea turtles out of recyclable materials.

From learning about turtles to reusing recyclable materials, the festivities will teach the next generation of Dominica many different facets of conservation.

If you’re not able to join us on World Turtle Day, we offer opportunities to participate in our sea turtle conservation efforts throughout sea turtle nesting season (March – October).
